About
Currently on long-term research leave (2011-12), funded by the Wellcome Trust, working with Newar Bania (materia medica wholesalers), Vajracaryas (Buddhist tantric priests and healers), and medicinal plant/animal/mineral collectors. We're documenting the history and present practices of a largely unknown Asian medical system, based in the Kathmandu Valley but extending, through trade links and knowledge transmission, both along the Himalayan chain and as far as Beijing and Chennai.
I'm presently supervising PhDs in ethnobiology and anthropology of religion. As a research associate at the William Brown Center of the Missouri Botanic Gardens, I can jointly supervise PhDs on ethnobiology with departments in the developed or developing world and would be happy to hear from students interested in pursuing research on ethnobiology, Himalayan studies, anthropology of religion, or protected areas-- especially sacred landscapes or indigenous/community protected areas.
