About

Tom is currently researching into the behaviour of trace elements in the direct process (bloomery process) of iron smelting, following recent investigations into the 'provenance' of iron. He is studying material from several experimental smelts using different ores. The aim of his project is to relate iron artefacts, found in the Late Roman/Early Germanic Iron Age in Southern Scandinavia, to archaeological smelting systems and sites. This research will help understand the complex role of iron during the period AD 200-600 in Southern Scandinavia.
