About
I joined the School of Law at Aberdeen as a lecturer in 2007 before being promoted to senior lecturer in 2011. I research in the broad area of criminal justice and criminal procedure, with a particular interest in the legal responses to organised crime, the use of DNA databases, and the presumption of innocence. I teach criminal law, criminology and evidence at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
My recent publications have appeared in the British Journal of Criminology, the Edinburgh Law Review, the Juridical Review, the Criminal Law Review, Legal Studies and the International Journal of Evidence and Proof. In addition I have co-authored a textbook on Irish criminal law.
I am a regular participant at national and international conferences, and have given guest lectures in Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States. I have been a visiting lecturer and scholar at the Universities of Maryland and Baltimore and the Victoria University of Wellington, and spent time as a visiting researcher at New York University. I frequently provide expert commentary for local and national media, and was a key participant in an Irish documentary on organised crime.
With the support of a Fulbright fellowship, I'm continuing my research on the legal reactions to organised crime in the UK and Ireland (to be published as a monograph by Hart Publishing). I'm based at the University of Maryland for the academic year 2011-12.
