Thesis Title: Times of Trouble and Deliverance: Worship in the Kirk of Scotland, 1645-1658

Prof. William G. Naphy
Dr. Sandra Hynes

About

My thesis, due for submission in June 2012, assesses the affects of the crises of the mid-seventeenth century on the day-to-day practice of Scottish religion.

Spanning from the legal implementation of the Directory for Public Worship in 1645 to the death of Oliver Cromwell in 1658, the thesis uses ecclesiastical source material from across Scotland. By analysing underused manuscript documents from the Kirk’s framework of local and national courts – kirk session, presbytery, provincial synod and General Assembly – the thesis highlights the flexibility of practices occurring within the Kirk of Scotland and the emerging dialectic process between local parishioners and their clergy.
